SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE, NOT MAJOR MEDICAL.
This is a supplement to health insurance. It is not a substitute for essential health benefits or minimum essential coverage as defined in federal law.
Not major medical insurance
The accident, hospital indemnity, cancer and critical illness (specified-disease) and other supplemental policies offered through InjuryPlans.com are not major medical insurance. They do not pay most medical bills, they do not cover all medical expenses, and they do not replace comprehensive health insurance. They are not ACA-compliant major medical plans.
Limited benefits
THIS IS A LIMITED POLICY. These policies pay fixed or scheduled cash amounts only for specific covered events, such as a covered accidental injury, a covered hospital stay or a covered diagnosis. Each benefit has its own dollar amount, frequency limits and conditions. There is no guarantee that benefits will cover your total costs. Some supplemental policies require you to have other qualifying medical, hospital and surgical coverage in order to buy or keep the policy.
Exclusions, limitations, waiting periods and pre-existing conditions
Every policy contains exclusions, limitations and reductions of benefits. These include waiting periods (for example, a waiting period before sickness benefits begin), pre-existing condition limitations, and per-day, per-occurrence or annual benefit maximums. Read the policy, outline of coverage and brochure for complete details before you enroll.
Keep your comprehensive coverage
InjuryPlans.com recommends keeping comprehensive health coverage where possible, and offers these plans to supplement it. Any decision to drop or not buy major medical coverage is your own decision, and it carries real risk:
- most medical bills would not be covered;
- you may owe California's individual-mandate tax penalty;
- you may have to wait until the next open enrollment period to re-enroll in major medical.
California individual health coverage requirement
California law requires most residents to have qualifying health coverage (minimum essential coverage) or qualify for an exemption. Otherwise they may owe a penalty on their state tax return. Supplemental and limited-benefit policies do not count as minimum essential coverage. Learn more from the California Franchise Tax Board and Covered California.
Benefits vary; examples are not guarantees
Benefits, premiums, eligibility and availability vary by state, carrier, plan, age, tobacco use and individual circumstances. Not all plans are available in all states. Premium examples, comparisons and case studies on this site, including "The California Study", are based on specific clients' actual quotes and are illustrative only. Claim examples are hypothetical. Testimonials reflect individual experiences. None of these are a guarantee of rates, benefits or savings. Final premiums and benefits depend on the insurer's underwriting and the policy issued.
Insurance carriers
Policies are issued by the insurance company named in each policy, quote and brochure (for example, Washington National Insurance Company). InjuryPlans.com is not an insurance company and does not issue policies. All coverage is subject to the insurer's underwriting, approval and the terms of the policy.
Tax treatment
Cash benefits from supplemental policies are often received tax-free, but tax treatment depends on your circumstances and on how premiums are paid (for example, with pre-tax dollars through an employer). Nothing on this site is tax, legal or financial advice. Please consult a qualified tax advisor.
